To avoid unsettling our dogs further, we like to try and place them in forever homes as soon as they arrive in the UK. Our priority is always to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for these deserving dogs who have already been through so much.
However, sometimes we require Emergency Foster Carers should an unexpected situation arise. Each dog flying to the UK is allocated an emergency foster, no more than 1 hour away from their adoptive home, who can step in when required. This careful geographical matching ensures minimal disruption and stress for the dog whilst providing vital backup support for their adopters.
Situations where an emergency foster may be used include if their adopters are not able to collect them straight away from the airport, a family emergency arises, or if the dog can no longer stay in the adoptive home. Our emergency fosters are vital in providing immediate, short-term care, giving our rescued dogs a safe and loving environment whilst we arrange their long-term placement.
Foster Criteria
To qualify as an emergency foster, you must:
- Be 18 years old or older

- Have no children under 7 years old in the home
- Have patience
- Be available to take in a dog on short notice
- Attend a homecheck/interview with one of our foster coordinators
How Emergency Fostering Works
When a dog is in need of short-term placement, our team will contact approved emergency fosters. You may be asked to be on “standby” for an adopted dog coming into the country. If you’re available, we’ll coordinate drop-off or pick-up within hours or days. The foster period can range from a few days to several weeks.
DMT DRSG covers the costs of all approved vet care and basic supplies. Your role is to provide love, stability, and observe the dog’s behaviour for future placement. Ongoing support is available throughout the foster period.
By opening your home temporarily, you’re saving a life and giving a dog the first step toward healing and a forever home.
Do you think you could offer a safe haven for a few days, possibly at short notice? If so, please apply via our Emergency Foster Application Form.
