Joey’s Adoption Story

Having never owned a dog before we got our gorgeous half mini/half standard black & tan female dachshund, Freo, in March 2020. We instantly joined several dachshund Facebook groups including the amazing DMT charity page. We have followed their incredible rescue stories and donated monthly for a few years.

It wasn’t long until we started thinking that Freo needed a friend however we held out until the time was right. In August this year we put in an application with the charity to rehome one of the rescues but our application was late and the little guy had already found a lovely family.

Less than a week later we were approached with the details of a gorgeous little chap named Joey and we instantly fell in love! Mum and I had our video interview with the lovely team and found out that we were successful. We couldn’t believe this was happening! It was all systems go, lots of reading up, calls and trips to the shops to buy Joey lots of new things. Joey then began his long journey from China to the UK – we tracked his every move with updates from the charity and constantly watching the flight tracker. He arrived with our family on Friday 16th August 2024 (aka the best day ever!)

Joey was so well natured, loving, playful and friendly from the moment he arrived – we couldn’t believe how confident he was as a rescue and having travelled so far! Despite Joey being so wonderful, being completely honest, it was a very challenging few weeks/months introducing Joey to Freo – she is a sassy little princess and struggled to adapt to having to share our attention but we love them both so so much, we wouldn’t give up! The charity gave us lots of support, helpful advice and tips and now 4 months on they are getting on extremely well, loving their walkies, trips to the park, cuddling up on the sofa, weekly training classes together and most of all, their favourite activity: playing tug of war!

Joey has brought us SO much happiness, laughter and love with his adorable little face, his long tail and his extremely long legs – so long that he has jumped onto the table and stolen our dinner on several occasions! He is named after a baby kangaroo and it certainly suits him!

Joey’s personality is just the best, he always looks so happy with his constant wagging tail and his little bottom is always excitedly wiggling! Although mostly well behaved now, Joey has adopted a new nickname for himself; “thief”, having stolen (and destroyed) Christmas decorations, birthday banners, pens, pencils, curtains (yep he might be a tiny dog but he pulled the entire curtain rail down), food (and lots of it) – you name it, if Joey isn’t meant to take it, he will but he has given us so much laughter with his mischievous acts!

We are so so grateful to the charity for all their incredible work to find these beautiful little pups their so well deserved, forever homes but most of all for providing us with our Joey.

We cannot wait to take Joey on lots of adventures in 2025 and of course see what mischievous things he gets up to which we will of course share with you all!
