I actually came across the charity’s website about a year before we applied. We wanted another dog and we wanted to rescue, but we needed to wait until Heidi (our mini dachshund) turned two so she’d be ready for a new sibling. In the meantime, I followed the updates, supported the raffles and Fight Fund Friday’s — donating where we could and quietly hoping that one day, the right dog would find their way to us.
And then we saw Hilda.
Back then, she was called Autumn, but something about her just stopped us in our tracks. We didn’t expect to be chosen on our very first adoption application — not at all — but somehow, we were. And we still feel so lucky that she was matched to our family.
When Hilda arrived from South Korea, her world had been so small. Daily things we take for granted — birds chirping, cars passing, airplanes — seemed completely new to her. We committed to the 3–3–3 rule: the first three days to decompress, three weeks to learn routines, and three months to feel at home. Those first days were gentle and quiet. No dramatic “movie moments,” just small, meaningful steps. A look of curiosity. A tail wag. A choice to come a little closer. Becoming “my shadow” didn’t happen overnight, but slowly, she started following me from room to room, checking in for reassurance, and learning that I was her safe person.
We used a dog stroller at first so she could see the world without fear while strengthening her little legs. Food helped too — she’s definitely food orientated — and those little training sessions helped build trust and confidence.
And the moment that truly melted me?
Within 24 hours, Hilda and Heidi became best friends. Proper cuddle buddies. They curled up together like they’d always been sisters, and from that moment, we knew they were meant for each other. Their little cuddly naps still melt my heart.
Today, Hilda loves, plays, explores, and settles into cuddles like she’s been doing it her whole life. She’s such a gentle soul. And she’s living proof that dogs from the dog meat trade aren’t broken — they’re unbelievably brave. With patience, kindness, routine, and love, they flourish. And when they trust you, the bond is unlike anything else.
To the charity, every staff member, every donor, and everyone who makes these rescues possible — thank you. You didn’t just save Hilda’s life. You completed our family. And a special thank you to the post‑adoption team, whose support has been incredible. We couldn’t have done this without you.
If anyone out there is thinking about adopting but has doubts — apply. They will support you and the right dog will eventually find their way to your family. And when they do, it will change your life in the most beautiful way.
