It is almost a year to the day since I first saw Ash (Xavi) on the DMT DRSG website and I was immediately in love.
I knew he was meant to be with us. I had only very recently discovered the charity whilst browsing the Internet after becoming really disillusioned with trying to adopt a rescue dachshund from other charities. Ash wasn’t the first dog we tried to adopt through the charity but we were so impressed that we had actually received a response that we were determined to keep trying and I am so glad we did. We picked Ash up on March 1st (my husbands birthday) and to say he settled quickly is an understatement, within an hour of been with us he was asleep on my son flat on his back legs akimbo
.
He didn’t take quite as quickly to our other 2 Dachshunds and for a few weeks he was resource guarding but he quickly learned he didn’t need to do that anymore. Throughout the whole time we were supported by our amazing post adoption support. About 2 months after we adopted Ash we lost our oldest boy Digger very suddenly but Ash has helped us and Chester our other Dachshund to heal.
In August we decided we wanted to adopt another Daschund from DMT DRSG, we didn’t actually apply for Finn (Theo) as I wanted a girl, but the adoption team approached us and asked if we would consider Finn as they felt we were a good fit for him and we are so glad they did. We picked Finn up on Sept 20th 2024. Finn is totally different to Ash, he hasn’t settled as quickly and he is very wary of new people. He is blind in one eye and this may be as a result of mistreatment. He is a little boy who needs to know that he is now safe and loved. I will be honest and say that we do struggle when visitors come to the house and we have had a couple of incidents, but we are now working with a behaviourist and are confident that we will be able to resolve these issues with time, patience and love. Max our post adoption support has been amazing and checks in regularly. Finn is a wonderful loving little boy and is my constant shadow, he loves to play with Chester and adores his walks, we are so glad we adopted him.
I think adopting Ash and Finn through DMTDRSG has been the best thing we have done. It is really important to recognise that it might not all be smooth sailing, these dogs have come from the most awful of circumstances and it takes love and patience but it is so worth it and you will have the support of the charity and all its amazing Pawrents every step of the way. Thank you DMT DRSG.
